Artist Maxfield Parrish’s Estate for Sale in Plainfield, New Hampshire

September 26, 2017

PLAINFIELD, NH. On the market in its entirety for the first time in over 30 years, The Oaks was the family estate of artist Maxfield Parrish from 1898 to 1966. The elegant historic property is made up of a spacious main house, Parrish’s renovated studio building, and a well-maintained guest house. The Oaks sits on 45+ acres near Plainfield Village and the Cornish, New Hampshire, town line.

True to its name, the property's winding drive is dotted with magnificent oak trees punctuating the landscape. The drive forms a large courtyard on which all three buildings front and culminates with a grand majestic oak that is reported to be one of the oldest in the state.

The property has many unique features—including archways, reflecting pools, mature landscaping, and the dramatic view of Mount Ascutney to the south—that are still intact and were the inspiration for many of Parrish's paintings. The studio was renovated and restored by the owner/architect in order to maintain many of Parrish's original features such as the coffered ceiling, archways, and abundant light.

Parrish was an American painter and illustrator known for his neoclassical style of art. He was quite possibly the most popular American artist in the early 20th century and was a direct influence on the Golden Age of illustration. Many of his vibrant illustrations can be seen on the covers of magazines during the early 1900s. Parrish was also known for his famous landscapes, portraits, and murals. One of his most notable murals, “Old King Cole,” continues to be a prominent feature behind the bar at The St. Regis New York’s prestigious King Cole Bar.

Parrish, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, received his education at Haverford College, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and Drexel Institute of Art, Science & Industry. He purchased The Oaks in 1898 and remained there for 68 years until his death in March of 1966. The state of New Hampshire recognized his work by naming Route 12A the “Maxfield Parrish Highway.”
